TITLE:  DEPUTY DIRECTOR FOR YOUTH OPPORTUNITY                                             

 

STATUS:       EXEMPT

 

DIVISION/DEPARTMENT: OWD/YOUTH OPTIONS UNLIMITED

 

SUMMARYOF RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Director of OWD, manage the development and implementation of programming for case management services, transitional employment and career services, alternative education and out-of-school youth programs in collaboration with City, community and law enforcement agencies as well as the Boston Public Schools.  Collaborate to ensure the success of the YO initiative in meeting its objective of increasing the employment rate for 14 to 24 year old court-involved/high risk youth.  Supervise coordinator level case management and career development staff; assist the Director in securing new resources, developing new partnerships and improving the service delivery systems of the programs.

 

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The general duties and responsibilities of the position are included in but not limited to the information listed below.

 

  • Direct planning, operations and reporting of outcomes of all Youth Opportunity activities.  Develop, recommend and implement short term and long range strategies, and goals.  Coordinate and motivate staff to accomplish goals.  Monitor and assess department’s performance against goals; evaluate and modify strategies and tactics as appropriate.
  • Directly or through subordinate supervisors, interview, select, orient, and train and schedule assigned staff; supervise daily activities of assigned staff, answering questions, resolving problems and adjusting work schedules based on priorities.  Evaluate work performance and recommend appropriate personnel actions.
  • Assist in building partnerships between community agencies, businesses, law enforcement and schools.
  • Oversee daily safety and other operations of the Youth Opportunity Center.  Develop safety and security procedures and protocol; monitor adherence to said policies by YO staff and other partners who share the facility.
  • Work with YO Database Manager, staff and external partners to continue to hone YO’s new database and data-collection systems. Maintain an accurate database of court-involvement, gang affiliations and other relevant information to be used for safety purposes. Provide regular updates to our referring agencies on any status changes of the youth in the YO program.
  • Implement measurements, reports and assessments for at-risk and out-of-school youth participants as they relate to Youth Opportunity objectives.
  • Serve as a member of the Boston Re-entry Initiative (BRI) Administrative Team in partnership with the Boston Police Department and the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Dept; serve as a member of the Boston Juvenile Re-entry Initiative through the Dept. of Youth Services.
  • Provide technical assistance, training and professional development support to YO Staff, employers, community-based organizations, law enforcement agency partners, statewide and national colleagues, and other government agencies.
  • Support grant writing and fund raising efforts for Youth Opportunity in collaboration with the city and through YO’s 501c3.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Work requires a Masters degree or equivalent education and experience; plus a minimum of 5 years related experience.  Must have demonstrated leadership and project management skills, especially in building business and education partnerships.  Must have experience in and the desire to work with inner-city public schools.  Must have management experience supervising staff who work directly with adolescents and post high school students.  Excellent organizational and communication skills are required.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Normal office environment; extensive local travel

SCOPE:

Directly or through reporting supervisors supervise department staff of up to 26 FTE’s and 4 Vista volunteers
