TITLE:    URBAN DESIGNER I 

 

DEPARTMENT/DIVISION:   URBAN DESIGN/PLANNING

 

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES: Under direction of the Deputy Director for Urban Design or their designee (Senior Architect, Senior Landscape Architect, or the Urban Design Technology Group Manager), responsibilities may include: assist in preparing graphics and written expressions of urban design policies, studies, and presentation materials; assist in design review of Projects; provide support to the Department and to the Boston Civic Design Commission (BCDC); and, support Agency goals as part of Urban Design Project (Design) Reviews and Planning teams as assigned.

 

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The general duties and responsibilities of the position are included in but not limited to the information listed below.

 

  • Prepare and submit architectural, planning, and urban design sketches/studies, documents, and records for review and analysis. 
  • Perform a wide range of Design Review tasks required by Article 80 processes, zoning or zoning relief requirements, or property controls.
  • With direction, prepare urban design analyses for large- and small-scale projects.
  • Prepare options focusing on a wide range of urban design and architectural issues, including design sketches and studies; create or assist in creating related presentations and graphics.
  • Assist in the development of guidelines, feasibility, and alternatives studies for development parcels.
  • Prepare presentations conveying results of urban and architectural design studies for supervisor and other Agency senior management.
  • Assist in making public presentations of Urban Design analysis and options for community groups, task forces, and other public meetings.
  • Provide urban design input for the preparation of RFPs (Request for Proposals) and planning studies as assigned by Supervisor.
  • Respond to public inquiries on urban design issues as directed.
  • Utilize the 3-dimensional model of the city and prepare computer-generated urban design analysis and presentation materials as necessary.
  • Work with the Urban Design Technology Group (UDTG) and GIS on applications and studies using the 3D smart model.
  • Provide broad content management support to BCDC and the Urban Design Department.
  • Work on organizational and analytic platforms for the Urban Design Department.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

  

 

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

Work requires completion of a degree in Architecture, Urban Design, or Urban Planning, plus 0-3 years of related professional experience in urban design, planning, or architecture.  Work requires ability to solve complex urban design, planning, and zoning problems; to analyze and interpret planning and design issues at a wide range of scales; to communicate clearly in both graphic and verbal form; and, to operate effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team.  Familiarity with Boston’s neighborhoods is desirable.  Candidate must additionally be able to work independently with minimal supervision.  Strong 3D computer graphic skills allowing strong visualizations (building, site, urban planning, and various analytics) are an essential requirement; proficiency with office software including AutoCAD, SketchUp, GIS, PowerPoint, Adobe software, and/or equivalent programs is required.  Active interest in working in a public sector review environment is key.

Normal office environment.
