Transportation and Infrastructure Planning Co-Op - Summer 2018

Flexible start and end dates; schedules open to discussion based on co-op student and employer needs. Co-op student must be available to attend occasional evening community meetings.



Under the direction of the Deputy Director of Transportation and Infrastructure Planning or his designee, this individual will provide planning, design, and engineering assistance for the Transportation and Infrastructure Section of the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA).


Recognizing that transportation affects the character and quality of Boston’s built environment, the Transportation and Infrastructure Section works to plan systems that are multimodal and take into account best practices of urban planning and design. Our team seeks to help neighborhoods maintain their unique character and quality of life while prioritizing walking, biking, and transit.


The selected candidate will work with this dynamic team. The team’s primary activities include:          

  • Reviewing development proposals, to ensure they support neighborhood needs and goals. This review process is a vital part of shaping the use, character, and design qualities of buildings and infrastructure in the city;
  • Collaborating in citywide and neighborhood planning to support the preservation, enhancement, and growth of neighborhoods;
  • Advancing Boston’s Complete Street Guidelines and sustainable infrastructure planning and design; and
  • Advocating for City goals and aspirations with partners at state and federal agencies.

Primary Role Responsibilities

  • Draft alignments, profiles, and cross sections for roadway design projects as well as temporary roads for construction to determine feasibility using appropriate design software;
  • Provide written analysis for transportation impacts of development projects in the Article 80 large and small-project review processes, interagency transportation initiatives, and transportation/environmental studies; 
  • Create graphics for internal presentations and public involvement meetings using PowerPoint;
  • Proof-read documents for grammatical errors, flow, and formatting; and
  • Attend staff, interagency, and public meetings and review sessions.


 Other Qualifications Required

  • Currently enrolled in a college or graduate degree program;
  • Interest in transportation planning and engineering;
  • Excellent written and communications skills;
  • Familiarity with the Microsoft Office Suite, specifically Word, Excel, and PowerPoint;
  • Familiarity with one or multiple engineering or design programs, such as AutoCAD, Civil3D, SketchUp, or Adobe InDesign.
  • Familiarity with transportation capacity analysis software such as Synchro or VisSim
  • Past experience with civil engineering and/or transportation projects a plus
  • Able to work in fast paced environment; and
  • Commitment to multicultural working environment.
