    TITLE: URBAN DESIGN & ENVIRONMENTAL PLANNING INTERN

     

    SUMMARY: INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY – SUMMER 2018 (UNPAID)

    The BPDA continues to advance the sustainability and resiliency of the City by planning new growth and guiding the adaptation of existing buildings and neighborhoods. This summer Internship will focus on urban scale building resiliency and cutting edge sustainability. The primary activity will be the production of an Existing Building Climate Resiliency Design Guidelines.

     

    INCLUDED, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

     

    Climate Resiliency Design Guidelines for Existing Buildings

    This initiative will draw from new construction practices in Boston and research, recommendations, and guidelines from Boston and other leading US cities to craft adaptation guidance for existing buildings. The guidelines are to include both narrative and illustrative descriptions that are readily accessible to lay people and professionals alike.

     

    • Building Typologies and Conditions– the guidelines are to address existing buildings typical of Boston ranging from small residential, to mixed use, and large commercial and industrial buildings.

     

    • Climate Change Impacts – the primary focus with be adaptation to coastal flooding hazards due to rising sea levels. The secondary focus will be adaptation to increased heat, precipitation, and more intense storms. The guidelines will provide strategies for responding to minimum changing climate conditions and rising sea levels.

     

    • Partnership and Engagement – the guidelines will be crafted in collaboration with local professional organizations and advocates. The BPDA will be the lead organizer.

     

    Work Activities

    Researching best building adaptation practices and complying exemplary adaption guidelines.

    Preparing narrative and illustrative descriptions of potential building resiliency adaptation.

    Participating in planning and organizing meetings internally and with external partners.

    Working in a collaborative team environment.

     

    Note: This is an unpaid Internship

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    The BPDA seeks intern candidates with at least one year of architecture and or building construction education, strong building design and graphic illustration skills, excellent organizational and communication skills, and a collaborative spirit.

     

    DATES OF INTERNSHIP PROGRAM: June 2018 to August 2018

    Summer Semester full- or part-time Internship (20-35 hours per week).  Flexible start and end dates; schedules open to discussion based on student and employer needs. Interns must be available to attend occasional evening review or community meetings.
