    SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Under the Director of Communications, the Assistant Director of Communications will manage and grow the Boston Planning & Development Agency’s (BPDA) online presence through multiple channels and generate positive content about ongoing work and initiatives at the BPDA.  

     

    The Assistant Director of Communications will support the Director of Communications in responding to media inquiries, tracking media coverage, and identifying opportunities for positive media coverage.

     

    The Assistant Director will play an integral role in promoting the BPDA’s brand and furthering the agency’s goal of communicating more proactively and transparently with the public.

     

    GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The general duties and responsibilities of the position are included in but not limited to the information listed below.

     

    • Manage and generate content for the BPDA’s social media feeds, website and external newsletter by working with the appropriate internal staff, outside stakeholders and other City of Boston agencies. This includes social media campaigns that support the ongoing work of the BPDA.
    • Identify new social media and digital opportunities to improve how the BPDA communicates with the public.
    • Compile responses to media inquiries, identify media opportunities, and schedule interviews with BPDA staff.
    • Draft press releases, media advisories and other written content necessary to execute both traditional and digital communication strategies.
    • Work with staff on necessary talking points and presentations for media interviews and internal and external events.
    • Work closely with the BPDA’s web team and graphic designers to create content and assist on branding decisions.
    • Support internal communication efforts by compiling and disseminating weekly internal newsletters.  
    • Contribute to the BPDA’s intranet with posts about staff achievements and organizational news, in close collaboration with the web team.
    • Work closely with departments and programs affiliated with the BPDA to generate positive content, including the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development.
    • Attend events and evening community meetings periodically in order to generate content and promote the BPDA’s work.
    • Supervise and distribute tasks to BPDA communications interns.
    • Perform other related duties.

     

     

    QUALIFICATIONS:

    Interest in real estate development, urban planning and local government and knowledge of Boston’s neighborhoods. Must be proficient in Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn with a deep understanding and ability to use other social media platforms. Familiarity with basic HTML, MailChimp and e-mail marketing. Familiarity with the Boston media market. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills are required.

     

    Must be calm, able to adapt to changing priorities, and able to prioritize competing tasks in a fast-paced environment. Self-driven, creative thinker who can work well independently and as part of a team. Must be able and willing to attend occasional public meetings held during evening hours.  

     

    A minimum of three to four years of working in communications, with experience managing social media accounts required.
