    TITLE: GIS ANALYST (TEMPORARY)

    TERM: 3 MONTHS

    SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Under the direction of the Manager; Office of Digital Cartography and GIS, produce maps for various BPDA, City of Boston Departments, and other agencies or individual’s uses. Provide spatially related data, analysis and reports for use by third party clients. Produce, manage and maintain GIS data in the form of spatial datasets for use in mapping and analysis as ESRI shapefiles, geodatabase feature classes, or SDE feature classes.

     

    GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    The general duties and responsibilities of the position are included in but not limited to the information listed below.

    • Receive requests from Planners and other agency staff, other City of Boston Departments, and other agencies or individuals for maps and/or geospatial data including demographic, planning, land use, assessing, zoning, Article 80, topographical, political or other various types.
    • Plan, organize, manage, and prioritize multiple projects concurrently including all tasks, schedules, and deliverables while communicating progress and eventual delivery with client who requested the materials.
    • Expert with the ESRI suite of software called ArcGIS desktop, including ArcGIS Server, Desktop, and associated programming languages and development tools
    • Use ESRI’s online mapping environment, ArcGIS Online, to create internal or public mapping applications. Knowledge of publishing 3D models and creating 3D web scenes. Access data from multiple sources such as internal, from a server, or other user content. Create symbols, utilize pop-ups, and use the programs querying tool
    • Strong understanding of all relevant GIS data formats, both vector and raster, to include shapefiles, geodatabases, 3D multipatch feature class, image formats such as PDF, TIFF, JPG etc., ESRI grid rasters such as DEMs, and familiarity with LIDAR derived point clouds.
    • Assist in the maintenance and update of the 3D smart model of the City of Boston using ArcGIS Pro 2.0, City Engine, SketchUp and FME. Work with terrain and raster related datasets using MassGIS LIDAR and other City imagery. Knowledge of publishing 3D models and creating 3D web scenes to AGOL. Experience with ArcGIS Server, especially with authoring & publishing map services, and building & maintaining a cache
    • Utilize ESRI GIS software for 2D mapping and 3D model support and maintenance. Working knowledge of ArcGIS 10.4+, ArcGIS Pro 2.0+, City Engine, SketchUp. 3D Analyst, ArcScene, in an Enterprise environment, and/or other desktop publishing software such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, to produce high quality presentation type maps. Develop creative options for displaying geospatial data in a layout and standards for clear and informative legends.
    • Use ArcMap toolbox for GP tools in the map making or data analyzing process. Also knowledge of ArcMap extensions include but are not limited to, 3D Analyst, City Engine. Also utilize ArcMap’s Toolbox to search for and operate tools used for advanced procedures.
    • Use SQL for building and implementing advanced queries on GIS datalayers or labeling statements. Also a general understanding of Python scripting also used for queries.
    • Manage, edit, and maintain various spatial datasets assigned to the BRA including zoning and planning districts using ArcMap, ArcCatalog, or other SQL management products in a geodatabase or SDE environment.

     

    KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE:

    • Work requires completion of a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography or related field or equivalent plus more than 2 years’ experience in the field.
    • Proficiency in GIS required specifically ESRI products such as ArcGIS Desktop 10.x, ArcGIS Pro 2.0 and extensions, ArcSDE, CityEngine and Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint).
    • Proficient in ArcGIS Geoprocessing with Python
    • Understanding of remote sensing analysis
    • Proficient in relational database environments including SQL Server, MS Access,
    • Spatial/statistical modeling and Statistics knowledge

     

     

    WORK ENVIRONMENT:

    Normal, fast-paced office environment.

     

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Little or no exertion; may spend extended periods at terminal.
