    DEPARTMENT/DIVISION: PLANNING/URBAN DESIGN

    ORGANIZATION OVERVIEW:

A city of opportunity! Would you like to play a part in shaping the city of Boston and enjoy an engaging and exciting career focused on creating the future of Boston while respecting its past? The Boston Planning & Development Agency is a self-sustaining agency focused on constantly improving and developing this wonderful city by making it a better place to live, work and play.

Urban Design (UD), part of the Planning Division, is pivotal to both the planning and development review processes of the BPDA. UD plays a crucial role in the development process by shaping individual building projects through Article 80 and Zoning Board of Appeal design review. UD also informs planning studies by contributing key urban design principles as well as by providing visualization tools to help determine the appropriate densities, heights, and characteristics of an area. UD ensures that there is a balance between contemporary architecture and Boston's historical context, be it a small porch addition in Roslindale or a downtown high-rise. Design review also exists to ensure that the public realm of streets, sidewalks, open spaces, and ground plane are designed to enrich public life and Boston’s reputation as a walking city.

Work requires carrying out design review with the ability to understand and solve complex landscape architectural and urban design problems with an understanding of architecture, planning, and zoning contexts;  to demonstrate understanding of climate change/sea-level rise issues with particular regard to identifying projects with future need for resiliency, including retrofits, and coordination with the public realm and accessibility requirements (current and future); to analyze and interpret planning and design issues; to communicate clearly in graphic and verbal form; and to operate effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team, as well as work independently, as necessary.
