POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the direction of the Senior Deputy Director for Transportation and Infrastructure Planning, assist in the division’s activities with regard to transportation planning, development review, transportation systems analysis and overall coordination of multi-modal transportation initiatives. This position places a particular emphasis on the analysis, development and implementation of progressive multi-modal transportation strategies, policies and programs.

 

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Work with the BPDA Planning staff and Boston Transportation Department (BTD) to implement the vision and goals of Imagine Boston 2030 and Go Boston 2030 by helping to manage growth in Boston, create new places to live, work and play
  • Improve quality of life, and foster more sustainable, equitable transportation choices by providing multimodal transportation planning expertise and technical support to BPDA Divisions, and other City departments and agencies
  • Analyze and support transportation studies and planning, summarize meetings with meeting minutes
  • Prepare presentation materials, agenda, and staff for internal and external meeting (interdepartmental & public)
  • Conduct Article 80 Small Project Reviews and evaluate project proposals against the new Article 80 guidelines
  • Support Article 80 Large Project Review and attend project meetings, review filing materials, draft comment letters and collaborate with BPDA Planning & Urban Design staff as well as BTD staff to formulate and assemble response
  • Apply a strong understanding of and experience with standard industry approaches to traffic and traffic capacity analysis utilizing leading software programs, support and conduct multi-modal transportation analysis
  • Participate in planning initiatives for specific city neighborhoods and citywide projects assisting with data collection and information management to inform land use, employment and population models for transportation planning projects and policies
  • Attend community meetings and neighborhood advisory groups
  • Assist in drafting Request for Proposals (RFP’s) for transportation planning initiatives and briefings for Senior Agency staff and City officials
  • Review and partner with managing and collaborating with consultants and service contractors
  • Contribute to conducting and managing a variety of transportation planning studies and initiatives including but not limited to neighborhood and corridor studies and plans
  • Research, write and compile reports, briefings and correspondance
  • Represent the BPDA in conjunction with other City and State agencies with planning and implementation and communication of transit and roadway projects
  • Manage special projects as assigned by BPDA
  • Perform other related duties as required

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BA in Urban Planning, Transportation Engineering or closely related field; MA preferred
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of relevant work experience in transportation planning and development review (internship experience considered)
  • Possess knowledge of multi-modal transportation planning and development review
  • Familiarity with federal, state and city agencies involved in transportation planning
  • Knowledge of standard approaches to transportation network analysis
  • Strong verbal and wrtiten communication skills
  • Knowledge of current federal, state and local transportation design and engineering rules, guidelines and best practices
  • Familiarity with progressive parking policies and practices
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office and data management software
  • Ability to assemble graphically compelling (clear) presentations, concepts and reports is highly desirable

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS & WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Standard office environment; occasional site visits / local travel
